Q: Is it ever considered appropriate for employees to buy birthday or Christmas gifts for their boss?
A: Yes, it often is appropriate, depending on the culture and custom of the office, to give a holiday gift. If you have a boss you are close to and this is comfortable to do, it is fine, particularly if he or she gives you a gift. If you do not receive a gift from your boss, though, you would not be the one to give one because that would be awkward all around. Sometimes employees go together and chip in on one gift for the head of their department or boss, and this is fine, too. You ordinarily would not give a birthday gift, however, although it would be fine to tell him or her happy birthday.
