Lending Rules: What is the etiquette of loaning out items?

by epi on February 28, 2014

Q: I loaned out my chocolate fountain on New Year’s Eve to a family member.  What is the etiquette of loaning items?

A: When anyone, whether it be a family member, a friend, or a neighbor, borrows an item, they should return the item as soon as possible. In your case, your relative should have returned your chocolate fountain within a few days after New Years. However, it would be fine for you to ask your relative to return your chocolate fountain or even offer to pick it up.

My Dad taught me only to lend things that I’d be okay with never seeing again, and that includes money. That has helped me to make some decisions through the years and I really think it makes sense!

Never lend anything money or otherwise unless you are prepared to lost BOTH.

This went before I meant it to … By both I mean the item lent and the friend you lent it to.
