I have yet another tipping question for the group. What’s a fair tip for a coat-check attendant these days? I haven’t used a coat-check in years so I’m sure I’m woefully out of date. If the type of facility makes a difference, I’m thinking of a full-service hotel; nothing fancy on the level of the Waldorf but a couple steps above a Holiday Inn.

Occasionally there will be a set charge for a coat-check, but if the service is provided gratis one can tip if there is a tip jar available. (Some museums, for example, have a mandatory but free coat-check, and one would not tip in that case.) I would say a proper tip would be a dollar or two. More if you’re feeling generous.
