My daughter has been engaged for 6 months, and the nuptials are planned for this coming fall. Although no formal “save the date” cards have been sent out yet, our family members have known the date. Our younger niece, who lives nearby, just got engaged last week. They have immediately set their wedding date for two months BEFORE my daughter’s wedding. Is that poor etiquette, or am I just being defensive? It feels like a family competition.

Nope as long as your neice does not pick the same day there is no etiquette issue. Two months earlier is not an issue.

You are just being defensive and territorial. Your daughter might have some “claim” on her day or weekend, and it would be rude for the niece to schedule a competing event, but just because daughter is getting married doesn’t mean that someone else can’t. Two months is a significant amount of time, actually.
