Righting the Wrong

Q: My husband accidentally spilled red wine on our friend’s white carpet. He helped to
sponge it up, but it did not all come out of the carpet. Should we offer to pay or give them a gift certificate for carpet cleaning?

A: Yes, you need to offer to pay for cleaning, just as you would replace a broken glass, etc. A gift certificate or gift is not required, but repairing the damage is.

I agree that offering to pay for the carpet cleaning is the polite thing to do. However, I think a polite host should turn down the offer. Assuming he wasn’t doing anything absurd like trying to juggle the wine glass, accidents like this should be written off as part of the cost of hosting.
