Newly Networking: Connecting a recent grad with job opportunities

by epi on May 28, 2012

Q: My friend’s son just graduated from college, and she wants him to network with my husband about job opportunities.  But I don’t think her kid would be a reliable employee.  What should I do?

A: It’s hard to assess the employment value of a friend’s child.  Leave that up to your husband.  Networking interviews are valuable learning experiences for recent grads.  The opportunity is a favor your friend won’t soon forget.

My friend and I visited a family we’ve known for 30+ years after the father died. We had taken several dishes of food to the family the day before the funeral. After the funeral we stopped by to visit and eat with them. I had slept only 3 hours within the last 48 hours and did not wait to be asked to serve myself. I asked if it would be okay if I served myself. My friend was disgusted with me for not waiting to be asked to join the buffet. Was my behaviour extremely rude?

Moreover, your friend was wrong to call you out.
