Inappropriate Indulgences: Incidents at office social events

Q: What are appropriate actions for a manager to take with and employee who overindulges at a social event?

A: At the event itself, quickly move the person away from any clients or prospects and offer him or her water, coffee, or some other nonalcoholic beverage.  Then arrange for the person to leave the event quietly.  Most important of all, never let someone who’s had too much to drink get behind the steering wheel.  Instead, take the person’s car keys and call a taxi or have a co-worker take him or her home.  The next day, first carefully review and consider your company’s policies regarding employee alcohol and substance abuse.  Then, address the issue with the person directly and listen to what he or she has to say about the incident.  Then make your decision about any specific action regarding the incident.

How about not serving liquor at work-related social events? I know that everyone should imbibe moderately, or if you know you have a problem, don’t drink at all. But for some people, it doesn’t seem like it’s that simple.
