Q: My brother’s new girlfriend is loud, tells off-color jokes- and is coming to our Thanksgiving dinner this year. What’s the best way to handle her?
A: Chat with your brother ahead of time. Say, “I’m happy you and Lisa are coming for Thanksgiving, but can you talk to her about toning down the jokes? They cross the line.” If that doesn’t do the trick, and she mouths off at the table, either take her aside and say, “I appreciate that you have a sense of humor, but your jokes are making some of us uncomfortable. Can you please stop?” or, at the table, simply cut her off with, “Enough about that! Who do you think will win tonight’s game?”
