Company Charity: When it conflicts with previous plans

by EPI Staff on August 10, 2010

Q: My company has asked employees to volunteer for a charity event. I don’t like being pressured, but I’d probably comply – except the event is on a weekend when I already have plans. What do I do?

A: Wow – this is a tough one! Sacrificing a weekend to your company is a big deal. On the other hand, by not contributing to a project that the higher-ups in your organization feel strongly about, you could be making a career mistake. Muster your courage and talk to your boss in private, explaining that you’d like to be there, but you’ve already made other commitments. Express admiration for the company’s interest in this good cause, and suggest that you’d be willing to help out on a day when the timing is more convenient.
