Remarrying A Mate: Protocol on rings and announcements

by EPI Staff on July 29, 2010

Q: My former husband and I are remarrying. Is it appropriate to use our old wedding rings, or should we get new ones? And how should we word the announcement?

A: There’s nothing wrong with using your old rings. It’s certainly practical – and cost-effective. But it’s an emotional issue, too, so you’ll want to assess how you feel about those old bands of gold. Do they remind you primarily of the good times, or of the problems that led to the breakup? Do you feel like they’re a jinx – or a symbol of your rekindled love? Let your instincts guide you, and do what seems best for both of you.

As for the announcement, traditionally there wasn’t any in the case of a remarriage. But these days people do send them, and if that’s the most sensible way for you to spread the word, that’s fine. You should use the same language as first-time couples – including the word “marriage,” not “remarriage.” For example, Elizabeth Carlton Upton and Ralph James Blair announce their marriage on July 29, 2010, at (city, state, and location only if it’s at a religious site).

My fiancee asked me to leave my engagement ring after an argument and never returned it despite my asking for it.I moved out and while we were in counseling he responded with my questions about our engagement and the ring with,”I am waiting to see if we can work this out” Is that my ring to return or is it his to take?

I would say that you do not currently have a fiancee. Yes he has every right to end the engagement and having done so you should give him back the ring. I am concerned that you are more concerned about the ring then the man however. Rings are just jewlery but it is clear that you are having a major falling out with your boyfriend that is on the point of breaking the two of you up. I would focus on the relationship not the ring. If the relationshiop works out the ring will as well.
