Odor Overload: When potent perfume permeates the office

by EPI Staff on July 7, 2010

Q: My coworker drowns herself in so much perfume that I’ve begun to feel nauseated when around her. What should I do?

A: If your coworkers is someone you know pretty well, it’s fair to say: “I’m sure you don’t realize this, but I get woozy from your perfume. Could you possibly wear less?” Telling her that it bothers you and asking that she apply it a little more sparingly is best, as long as you are sincere and sensitive. However, if you barely know her or you’re totally uncomfortable with approaching her, asking the boss or someone from HR to speak with her in private may be a good way to get a breath of fresh air.
