Bathroom Banter: Stopping the stall talk

by EPI Staff on May 20, 2010

Q: Some of my coworkers insist on chatting while we’re in the bathroom and each in our own stall. I find this annoying. Am I being a prude?

A: Not at all. While some women feel perfectly relaxed doing this – and some even use an office bathroom as a kind of lounge – others, like you, expect to have a little privacy when you’re in there. Next time a coworker tries to engage in chitchat through the stalls, try saying, in a lighthearted tone, “Let’s take a break for a minute!” Or you can be direct: “I’ll talk to you when I’m out of the bathroom.” Whatever you say, be pleasant; your office mates are just being friendly and probably don’t realize they’re making you feel uncomfortable.

That used to happen to me, where one of the attorneys I work for (I’m a paralegal)wants to talk about an assignment when we’re in the stall. A few times of my politely saying “I’ll get back to you when I’m finished here” or something like that got the point across.
