E-mail Overload: Abusing Technology

by EPI Staff on April 27, 2010

Q: After I started chatting with a woman via an Internet message board, we gave each other our e-mail addresses to exchange recipes.  Now she won’t stop writing me.  Every day I receive jokes, chain letters, and other junk email from her.  How do I call a halt to this barrage without changing my address.

A: You can start by simply asking her to stop.  Be clear and tactful; in your next note, tell her you enjoy exchanging cooking ideas, but you just don’t have the time to read and respond to her daily messages.  Let her know that a periodic e-mail is fine, as long as it’s not a joke or a mass mailing.  That should do it.

If she won’t stop sending you e-mails, you can set up a filter so that anything coming from her e-mail address goes straight to a specified folder. That way you won’t have to deal with her e-mails in your Inbox; you can either delete everything in that other folder unread, or go through them if and when you have time. Either way, they’re out of your way.
