Q: Do you serve soup or salad first at a formal dinner party?
A: Soup is served first; salad is served after the entree and before dessert. For less formal dinners, salad can be served before or with the entree.

My family & I would like to recognize 3 Policemen & 3 Fire Firemen that took time out of their lives/work, to serve as Pallbearers at my father-in-law’s funeral. (His last request.). It it proper etiquette to give them all a letter of thanks or certificate of thanks. Our thought is that they might like to have either one, to put in their portfolio for future reference. Please recommend the wording also. Thank You.
Condolences on the loss of your father-in-law. It is kind of you to be thinking about the best way to thank those who helped at his funeral. In this case, a letter of thanks would be appropriate. If you wanted to do more ,you might consider a donation in his name to a local policeman’s or fireman’s charity.
Also, if I am not mistaken, in a formal, six-course scenario, a small sherbert is served between the entree and salad to cleanse the palet.
