Religious Rascals: When kids aren't behaving during a sermon

by EPI Staff on January 21, 2010

Q: At church, I keep seeing kids playing with hand held games during the sermon–and hearing the annoying beeps.  Should I say something to their moms?

A: Ask an usher to step in.  They generally have experience with such requests, plus they might be able to offer quiet alternatives for restless kids, like activity tables nearby with age-appropriate religious worksheets.  Your pastor can also help by telling the congregation to turn off all devices during the service–including video games.

The Priest at our parrish has actually stopped the sermon and said, quiet matter of factly, there is a soundproof children’s room right off over to the left here….please be courteous to your neighbors and use them.

Thank goodness our church has a ‘cry room’ because our 2 1/2 year old cannot sit still during service. We also have a gentleman and his daughter take the younger children into their own special room to play. They will bring them up for children’s moment during the service and take them back downstairs.
