Q: Recently, I went to lunch with friend who couldn’t seem to stop talking about her fad diet. After about half an hour of this I was feeling bored and a little insulted (she wouldn’t go on like this if she didn’t think that I was overweight too). How can I get her to stop?
A: Speaking your mind is productive if you do so sincerely. Tell her that you want to enjoy your food–and her company–and request that she change the topic. An honest statement is kinder than the indirect (and somewhat hostile) approach of attacking her all-diet, no-exercise plan. Yes, you could confront her about implicitly criticizing your weight–but that may be more in your mind than in hers. And besides, you want to end the diet talk, not the friendship.

Kathy, please do not type your question in all uppercase letters. That is considered shouting on message boards/forums/internet chat rooms and the like. Thank you!
