Teacher Trinkets: How to thank your child's instructor with a gift

by EPI Staff on December 30, 2009

Q: My son is in first grade, and I’d like to give his teacher a holiday gift to express my thanks.  Can you suggest some ideas?

A: Coffee mugs and ornaments are common purchases, but if you want to get creative, here’s a general rule:  Your gift should express respect and affections without being extravagant ($10 to $25 is good).  Why not involve your son in thinking of potential presents?  See if he can find out his teacher’s interests:  fishing, gardening, cooking, poetry?  A gift certificate to a bookstore, a local restaurant, or even a manicure can be a safe bet.  You could also include a more personal gift, like a signed “contract” promising your teacher that you will read to your son every night, for example.  Of course, before you spend too much time brainstorming, check with your school district for any restrictions or guidelines.

My favorite teacher gift is a movie basket. Fill a small basket with one bag of microwave popcorn, one or two movie-style boxes of candy (usually about $1 at the grocery or dollar store), one or two sodas, and a $5 gift card to Blockbuster or other local movie rental. It is simple and pretty easy, but everyone loves it!
