Job Loss in the Family: Dealing with a laid-off relative

by EPI Staff on December 29, 2009

Q: My brother-in-law was laid off from his job recently.  I’ll be seeing him soon for the first time since the pink slip.  Do I ask how his search is going?

A: Express your concern during a moment alone:  ”Tim, I was so sorry to hear about your job loss.  I’m sure there’s another opportunity around the corner.  But I wanted you to know I’ve been thinking about you.”  Then let him guide the conversation.  If he says “Thanks.  I’m glad to have a chance to forget that and now enjoy the weekend,” change the subject!  He’ll know you’re interested if he ever wants to talk.
