THE DR. PHIL SHOW is looking for guests for an upcoming show – Holiday Dilemma & Holiday Etiquette
Along with the fun of the Holidays also come dilemmas:
- –How much is too much to drink at the company Christmas party?
- –My neighbors’ lighting display looks like a helicopter landing pad & keeps me up at night
- –My husband feels the need to put up as many lights as Clark Griswold in CHRISTMAS VACATION
- –Every year your mother-in-law makes awful meals; do you tell her the food is bad?
- –Do I have to tip my mailman & my hairdresser at Christmas?
- –My child wants to convert to Judaism so she can have 8 nights of gifts
Dr. Phil & Peggy Post will advise on what the proper Holiday etiquette is for your Holiday situation

We were given a gift we already own. Is it ok to let the gift giver knwo we appreciate her thoughtfulness but we already have this? Should we keep it and try to exchange the gift?
Thanks.
“Jane, you are so sweet to give us the wonderful toaster, but we just received one we’ve already used. Would you mind if we exchanged it?”
Allow her to offer to exchange it for you if she offers and be prepared to suggest something at a similar price point if she asks what you’d like. But, if she says, “I bought it at Macy’s; you can exchange it there” then do so on your own. Here’s hoping it hasn’t gone on steep discount since she purchased it if she doesn’t offer a receipt or had included a gift receipt. If she did include a gift receipt, then none of the above is necessary; you may exchange it and let her know in your thank you note you did so and appreciate her generosity.
