My husband and I have been married for 30 years. Although my relationship with his exwife was very poor for many years, during the last 5 yrs or so our relationship has been more amicable. She has even come to our house to share holidays. This was done for the most part for the children’s (and grandchildren’s) sake. (Just for background: the children lived in our home since age 12 or so, and we are very close).

Their mother (husband’s ex) is now in the last hours/days of a long battle with cancer.

My question is how to handle calling hours/funeral. I would think it would be appropriate for me to be there for the children, but for how long? Stay for a respectable time and leave? Stay the whole time? Of course, their mother’s family and friends will be there. This is all rather uncomfortable at best, but will gladly set my feelings aside to do what would be best for the kids.

Need advice from anyone who has been through this or who knows the etiquette for this situation.

Thanks so much,

Cindi

Your husband should ask the children what they would prefer and convey those thoughts to you. You are to be commended for your sensitivity for the feelings of her family.
