Playground Busybodies: When they won't leave you alone

by EPI Staff on August 27, 2009

Q: Going to the local playground is not much fun anymore because my child is more than a year old and isn’t walking yet.  I hate probing questions from the other moms (whom I barely know).  How do I change the subject when a stranger asks, “Is she walking yet?”

A: The other parents probably don’t stop to think that children grow and acquire new skills at vastly different rates, so what is one mother’s icebreaker can be another mother’s  sensitive spot.  When someone asks a question that makes you tense try a bit of humor:  “Not quite yet, but she’s a champion crawler.”  Then shift things by asking, “How about your child?  How old is she?  I love her little shoes!”
