Is turning you fork upside down proper when signaling the waiter that you are finised eating?
Dear Judy,
To signal the waiter you are finished, place the knife and fork parallel to one another at the four o’clock position on the plate. As for tines up or down, either is correct, though down is more common in Europe.
Question – A group of our friends get together frequently for dinner, barbecues, special occasions, etc at each other’s homes. One particular friend will often want to “take a walk” and leave the host’s home to stroll around the host’s neighborhood for half an hour to an hour. She will ask others to join her in her stroll. Is it rude to leave the gathering to join her ?
Dear Maggie,
By now everyone knows of your friend’s somewhat quirky behavior; its puzzling she would go to visit a group and then remove herself from them for a neighborhood stroll. If everyone is accepting of it, and your absence doesn’t upset the host or meal times, then go with her if you like. If she is an exercise fiend and the group is like minded, it would be nice to make it a group activity.
At least she’s not peeking in the medicine cabinet!
