Soup Spoon: Where it goes

by EPI Staff on May 21, 2009

Q: I was taught that a soup spoon should be placed on the saucer between sips, but I’ve noticed other people leaving it in the bowl. What’s correct?

A: It all depends on what the soup is served in. When it comes in a soup bowl or cup, it’s best to leave your spoon on the saucer. But on some occasions, usually the more formal ones, soup is served in a shallow soup plate that is resting on top of another, flatter plate. When that’s the case, leave the spoon in the soup plate rather than resting it on the one below.

My cousins son is graduating with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. How do I address his card I will send by mail?

Congratulations on your son’s coming graduation. You would address him as a Pharm. D. once he has completed his program. Until he has received his degree you continue to use your usual form of address.
